Research

Research has consistently been our most significant financial contribution to cancer control. At our founding, with limited funds available, most members of Cancer Council Victoria were keen to ease the suffering of cancer patients immediately with existing medical tools. But when a windfall first fundraising effort in 1937 raised $7.7 million (in 2023 dollars,  66,000 Pounds at the time) money was immediately invested in research into the causes and treatment of cancer. Some funds were used to create a cancer registry, vital to generating the data necessary for what later became knowns as cancer epidemiology. Other money was set aside for grants for clinicians and scientists researching cancer in patients and in the laboratory. The massively successful 1958 fundraising campaign allowed for even greater investment in grants. Through the 1960s Cancer Council Victoria was the largest funder of grants in the state, helping to build cancer research capacity that continues to pay off today. In the 1980s, Cancer Council Victoria began investing in our own research teams, which became the Cancer Epidemiology Division and Behavioural Sciences Divisions of today. Supporting high quality research continues to be one of our greatest contributions to cancer control.
