Primary prevention programs have been some of the most visible and well-known aspects of Cancer Council Victoria's work since tobacco control to stop lung cancer became a prime focus in the 1960s. Our prevention programs aim to stop cancer before it starts and extend to evidence-based advocacy, health promotion through education, and regulatory change. Cancer Council Victoria is responsible for the first anti-tobacco television advertising campaign in Australia in 1971, conceiving and launching the "Slip, Slop, Slap" sun and UV protection campaign in 1981, which was later encompassed by SunSmart in 1988. Alongside these iconic programs, Cancer Council Victoria has also investigated the links between food and cancer, and since the early 2000s has developed campaigns to promote healthy eating to prevent disease.
