Message From Todd

I’m delighted to share the latest updates and breakthroughs made possible by your kind support.
It was wonderful to see Melbourne and many other parts of Victoria awash with yellow this Daffodil Day. Getting the opportunity to catch up with many of you and thank you in person for your kind support at our Daffodil Day flower stalls throughout the city is always a highlight. If I didn’t catch you personally, then please know how grateful I am for your support.

It’s a heartwarming day for all of us here at Cancer Council Victoria as we see our community, local businesses, and people like you embrace the spirit of hope that Daffodil Day brings.

I was touched to see people leaving messages of hope for loved ones and purchasing daffodils to fund research into new cancer treatments.

This year, our Chief Financial Officer, Sarah Clement embraced the Daffodil Day spirit alongside the Mordi Sea Dippers and many other Victorians braving the icy waters as part of our new Daffodil Day Dip challenge.

Mordi Sea Dippers

Your support on Daffodil Day, and throughout the year makes sure no one has to go through their cancer journey alone. Our cancer nurses, like Laura, are only a phone call away on 13 11 20 to provide advice, comfort and understanding through such a difficult time.

Recently, I had the opportunity to spend a day with Fire Rescue Victoria taking part in their Fire Ops 101 program. The day gave me a deeper insight into the risks firefighters face every day to keep us safe, including risks to their long-term health. I also participated in a ‘Cancer Conversation Hour’ where we discussed the cancer risks faced by our firefighters and the importance of prevention, research and support. Watch a short video of my firefighting experience here.

While one in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, more people are surviving cancer than ever before. Research is changing the future of cancer, but without you this research simply wouldn’t be possible. Thanks to your support we can continue to fund research like that of Professor Mark Dawson who is working on a project to improve success rates in cancer treatment, particularly for blood cancers.

Your compassion is what makes this possible, bringing us closer to a cancer free future.

Now, as spring arrives and we start to see a glimpse of warm weather on the horizon (and I remind you to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide), there are still plenty of ways you can continue your support before the year ends. Whether you participate in events like Girls’ Night In or Relay for Life, sign up for a regular monthly donation, or even consider leaving a gift in your Will as an ongoing legacy, your support of vital cancer research, prevention and support services will be put to work having a direct impact on those living with cancer in Victoria.

Thank you for your continued kindness.
